Mapping the Path to Renewable Energy

The energy transition provides an unprecedented opportunity for clean jobs, clean air, and vital economic development. Falling costs of wind, solar, and energy storage have led to an acceleration of renewable energy worldwide, creating new possibilities.

While real change is underway, it must occur on a larger and faster scale. By 2030, in order to keep pace with the level of power sector decarbonization needed to limit climate change to 1.5°C, clean energy will need to triple globally above 2022 levels. This significant increase must be achieved while also staying within climate justice guardrails.

The installed capacity from renewable energy has increased tremendously in the past decade. However, more efforts are needed to scale up and speed up the energy transition to ensure the net-zero trajectory can be accomplished.

Unlocking Insights

In our collective effort to combat the climate crisis through renewables, a robust data center is critical to monitor the progress of the energy transition.

The Global Energy Transition Tracker is an open database and platform providing vital energy data for different zones around the world. It monitors the phase-out of fossil fuels and the progress of renewable energy development, while also identifying policies, financial resources, infrastructure, and considering social and environmental aspects that either facilitate or obstruct the transition.

The tracker lists zones with potential for scaling up renewable energy. It collects data and information to help stakeholders drive real change in the energy transition at various levels, including cross-national, national, or sub-national.
